Mark Stewart was born in 1961 in Melbourne, Australia, studied painting at Monash University and at the Victorian College of Arts, University of Melbourne. He lives and works in Cairns, Queensland, near the Great Barrier Reef. He comments: ‘The key concerns in Spawn are environmental and technological, both critical societal issues at the turn of the millennium. I wish to draw people’s attention to their natural surroundings by the re-presentation of its beauty in a fragmented, multi-image format which has the look of high resolution video screens. Spawn teems with life, rich in biological and technological information, mirroring not only what is around us but what connects us all – the seas and the satellites. Both have to be respected and used with care if we are to survive into the next millennium’.
