Ann Grocott was born in 1938 at Glenelg, South Australia, and now lives in Bundaberg, Queensland. She is self-taught as an artist and has been painting and exhibiting since the mid-1980s. She comments: ‘The painting shows one of my granddaughters, healthy, vital, and young, standing on the ancient soil of the Kimberleys, where we lived for a couple of years. The small figure of her sister was added to balance the picture. I was struck by the immense sky and light behind her. I thought of this old land, time measured in aeons, and the fleetingness of youth’. The Kimberleys is a sparsely populated sandstone plateau in northern Western Australia with deep valleys and dramatic scenery.
