Daisy Pimentel was born in 1956 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where she runs her own art school for children, teenagers, and adults. Her picture is divided into six segments, three of which contain portrait studies of an elderly man, a child, and a worker, each expressing concern. Pieces of cut cork fixed to the canvas represent roots and trunks of trees threatened with felling, giving the impression that the figures are in a forest or plantation. Collaged torn paper messages reflect the artists disquiet. She comments: We are destroying our lives, because if there are no trees, there is no water. Our children will have an uncertain future; the old feel undervalued, with no protection. If we can work together to confront these problems, we can create a better country. Only then can I think with faith in the year 2000.
